Czech food is nothing if not hearty and filling. We went to Cafe Rustica in hopes of getting roast duck with bread dumplings. We missed out on the duck-- instead we got a whole shank of pork. They practically served it in a basin.

I know that when I go abroad I wanted to go to Prague but I didn't quite know what to do when I got there... and then I found these delightful posters.

I can only hope and pray that this becomes one of the nominations for "best song" at the Oscars. It would make my year.

H.R. Puffenstuff is the most terrifying children's show EVER [27 Jul 2009|07:22pm]

I already posted the trailer for this earlier (please note: there are two trailers out. One highlights the horror aspect of the film and the other highlights the more...comical parts of the film) but this is an interview from Comic-con with Diablo Cody (writer), Megan Fox (star), Karyn Kusama (director), and some guy.

I watched this when it was first posted (345 hits) and because of the genius title ("Megan Fox talks dirty") it exploded to the 886,804 hits it has today. This movie should be fantastic

Highlights include
- Diablo Cody looking freaking gorgeous
- The whole crew being ridiculous
- Megan Fox getting major points for recognizing the awesomeness of Comic-con
- The guy interviewing them all is adorable

Movies kick serious ass [17 Jul 2009|01:27pm]
Whip It

I am slowly falling in love with this movie. I didn't even know what roller derby was a couple of months ago-- but it made my list of "violent sports I think fondly of." The best part (aside from ladies kicking ass) are the derby names. Drew Barrymore is Smashley Simpson and Kristen Wiig is Malice in Wonderland.

__________

Jennifer's Body

Written by the same lady who did Juno (Diablo Cody) its about a cheerleader/homecoming queen who becomes possessed and starts killing her classmates. It employs about half of the Veronica Mars crew PLUS Allison Janney. Yay.

__________

Fame

I am not quite sure if this is going to me a musical or just a movie with music in it but the trailer gives me goosebumps. Plus-- dance movies are my guilty pleasure.

__________

The Invention of Lying

This is probably going to be an average movie. I mostly just posted it because a) I like Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey and b) the scene with Stephanie March cracked me up

__________

Shutter Island

This movie looks TERRIFYING.

__________

Where the Wild Things Are

Aside from making me tear up every time I see it (seriously) I loved this book and I wish it heaps of success.

__________

Sherlock Holmes

Umm...YES! Its directed by Guy Ritchie (RocknRolla and Snatch) and has Robert Downey Jr in it whom I have loved since Singing Detective. I recently realized he was on Ally McBeal for a stretch and sang! Mah fav is the solo he does on the piano ("River" by Jonie Mitchell) ACH! So good!

Cat Davis= new personal hero [14 Jul 2009|06:03pm]
Munich doesn't have chocolate chip cookies.

("What!" you gasp)

I KNOW!

Chocolate cookies are ubiquitous here in the US. Its the default dessert. So, naturally, when the craving hit-- I just assumed I would go out to the store and buy a pack.

Nay!

I read tons of books to try and acclimate myself with cultural differences I might encounter. I never thought I would be denied food.

So that is why this video that I found is practically like a musical memoir.

"...all the crazy fish say...." [14 Jul 2009|05:59pm]
Word of the Day
cattywumpus (adv.)
1) askew or awry
2) positioned diagonally

I am thrilled that words like this exist. When I first read it I thought it was one of those words the author makes up to seem more colorful, but, no-- its REAL!

Spread it like wildfire.

So, naturally, I am thrilled for the new Harry Potter film. My enthusiasm is only doubled by seeing this picture:

It is Ron in a SCRUM CAP. Quidditch is really Wizard rugby. Own up Rowling!

Given the latest trend, though, they will probably announce tomorrow that they are pushing the release date back six months. Bastards.

afterellen.com put out this delightful commentary on the upcoming movie... ("Why is Daniel Radcliffe dressed up like a 1993 lesbian?..."). The whole thing made me laugh...and also made me realize that I might just have a wishful-thinking-dar as opposed to a gaydar. Sad day.

Open letter to Hilary Swank:
Dear Hilary,
Any time you want to stop making movies that make me sob-- feel free to do so. I always look so sad crying at home/in a theater/ on an airplane.
Just kidding- you are amazing.

Trailer for Amelia

New favorite song of the week:

by Bell X1

Any song that has the odd reference to Of Mice and Men is worth giving a listen to (Till we start talkin' about those rabbits, George/ Oh won't you tell us 'bout those rabbits, George)

My new perverse joy is to read the comments on political blogs-- especially on thedailybeast.com. It seems to be populated exclusivly by neo-cons and really pompous liberals.

My favorite exchanges so far

Fenario:Your logic is flawed. From this, I will tread slowly, so as not to lose you amongst the dense thicket of discourse

and this one!

edenscape24 hey Kid, Sub

please don't change...keep the racial jabs...it ensures we will NEVER...EVER...EVER have Republicans in power again and I am all for that. I agree, you guys are totally not racists...keep sending out the cds, keep posting on Twitter, keep carrying the signs at Teabagfests...you idiots are doing the job for the Democrats and we couldn't be happier than to stand out of the way and watch you hang yourselves.

its all a tissue of LIES! [30 May 2009|07:41pm]
So-- I am in Washington DC taking a course the Travel Channel offered on film editing/documentary making. Which has been super interesting and hella-intimidating. The people we have met are ridiculously interesting and make me have hope for having a career in Travel (be it at the Travel Channel or elsewhere).

The teacher claims that having a camera with you is like having an all access pass to wherever you want to go-- which is not true at all. People are terribly suspicious of you when you have a camera in hand.

My sister did her first shoot at a salon. She came in smiling and when she learned that the people in the salon were French she spoke French to them. How charming.

As Catherine was shooting, however, there were two cosmetologists behind her back speaking rapid French clearly wondering why she was there. Another lady snapped at my sister. If my sister was having trouble--I was fairly sure that I was screwed. If my cute/adorable sister was viewed as a suspicious character--I would probably have the cops called on me.

Our assignment called for motion shots so I went to a gym. It was pretty successful. If a person came up to me in a gym and asked to film me I am fairly certain I would object vigorously-- as it was i was trying desperately to keep my reflection out of the shot.

I am also not used to filming people. Its still kind of weird jamming a camera in someones face-- especially if they are working out. At one point I got nervous and asked the girl I was filming if she was from around here (Washington) she just gave me a puzzled look. She was either wondering if I was going to stalk her house or whether I was stupid enough to think she commuted to the gym from Boston.

What I should have done was come clean and assure her that I actually was that stupid.

Its day 3 now and I am exhausted.

Ugh.

More to follow.

Your resentment...is delicious [26 May 2009|12:23am]
I was thinking that maybe, after I graduated, my obsession with TV shows would recede to a more healthy amount (i.e. finishing an entire season on DVD would perhaps happen over a month rather than a two day period). But...no.

I just finished Season 1 of Veronica Mars and kind of loved it. Looking back I kind of love everything Kristen Bell does: Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Veronica Mars, Heroes before it sucked, the narrator in Gossip Girl, and Reefer Madness: The Musical. She is one of those actors I've decided I want to see everywhere...but for now I shall have to be content with a steady string of successful and enjoyable movies...*sigh*...my cross to bear.

Plus...there is this interview

_____

GLEE

I'm pretty accepting of everyone but once you admit to me that you don't like musicals-- I can't help but thinking that you are deficient in some way. My new favorite show=Glee. Glee has managed to bring 80s rock ballads (REO Speedwagon! F*** Yeah!) and and a capella music together in a magical and awesome way. The finale at the end of the pilot is freaking awesome. I didn't think Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" could get any awesomer but it did.

Jane Lynch is the perfect villain and even more important-- so quotable ("Your resentment...is delicious"). She captains a squad of (from what I can tell) evil cheerleaders who work to bring down the underdogs in the glee club. Classic struggle of good versus soul-sucking evil.

Plus the characters in glee club are so heart-breakingly cute. My favorite is the manic Rachel Berry. Despite everyone treating her terribly she continues to believe she is talented-- and it isn't just delusional self-confidence-- she really is talented.

Rachel: You are very talented
Finn: Really?
Rachel: I would know. I am very talented, too.

I think I managed to post the entire episode here.

PS: I just went on imdb.com to look at something about Glee and it is up 4,047% in popularity this week. Crazy.

Gervais + Elmo = Hilarity on 'Sesame Street' [23 May 2009|10:50pm]

I like how Elmo is the one who gets the giggles and looses control.

Gervais has several podcasts on iTunes that are worth a listen (current favorite: Ricky Gervais...on Natural History). Its a podcast so its FREE. No excuses.
